Problem Statement

The Irish Design shop needs packaging specifically designed for their in house jewellers designs and the wedding ring workshops conducted in the studio.
The jewellery packaging needs to reflect the shop’s price point, fit the various jewellery, represent the design shop’s branding, be made in small quantities and be laser cut.

My Role

I designed this packaging myself and worked with the shop owners on the parameters that needed to be in place.

Main Learnings

This was the first time that I worked on a project with a brand associated with it and working so closely with the client. This meant that a lot of communication was necessary, as well as a strong understanding of their aesthetic and budget.

Research

A wide scope was taken initially at the research stage. This then was narrowed down by the price point, materials and manufacturing process that was chosen by the owners.

Ideation and Prototyping

These two stages of the design process merged as it was important to the owners that they saw the physical product early to assess its viability. During this stage Solidworks and illustrator were used to do mock up options and a laser and paper cutter were used to prototype.

Final Product

The final packaging for the resident jewelers was the hexagonal origami boxes seen below. This design was decided upon as three different sizes could easily be made on the paper cutter, to fit the various jewelry sold. The grey colour of the box and the orange tissue paper inside was decided upon as it reflected the branding of the shop and used materials available.

The final packaging for the wedding ring workshop boxes were the double and single style felt design. The layered felt design was chosen because this reduced the amount of material needed and made better use of the laser cutter process. The orange rubber bands and circle design on the lid were added to reflect the shop branding.
