Problem Statement

Feeding America needs a way for more people to donate money to their charity in a quick and easy way.

Our team looked at how this could be done by young working professionals in restaurants and through the Venmo App. This project was also done in a series of Design Spints throughout the quarter.

My Role

I was on a team of four where we all conducted research interviews, developed the design and delivered our solution to the client. I was more familiar with programs such as Figma, so I did most of this prototyping.

Main Learnings

From this project I learned:

  • How to take into a design the various stakeholders needs; in this case Feeding America, Venmo, the users and restaurants.

  • The value in creating low and high fidelity prototypes for testing and when one may be more applicable over another.

  • Design principles for developing an application with multiple functions.

  • How to work on a project utilising the Design Sprint to move it forward.

  • The importance of bringing a team together and building camaraderie (one of us always brought a dip to share at our meetings).

Sprint One

In this stage of the project we were doing interviews to understand our users needs and attitudes towards donating and current behaviour in this space. We did this by speaking with people, as well as providing options that users ranked.

In general we were exploring the space. By the end of this stage we narrowed down to a preliminary direction of donating through Venmo at cafes.

I feel like giving my $5 to someone on the street is more impactful than a charity in a shop

Sprint Two

In Sprint Two we were looking closer at how our solution could be implemented into cafes, how the interface should look, what should be included and understanding the user’s journey coming to the interaction.

Concept and feature storyboards.

Testing QR locations in cafes and food halls.

Interviewing preferences on app content.

I want to know what my friends are donating to. If they care then I should care.

Sprint Three

In the final Sprint we were looking at finalising the design of the app, narrowing down how it would be integrated into peoples lives and how it would benefit the stakeholders.

I highly value details provided by the charities and they have to be accessible. I’d love to know how exactly my donation is used and how it can help.
— Chris

Final Design

Our final design utilised Venmo’s current user base and platform to enable people to easily donate to charities they care about, like Feeding America.
